Bubba Gump Shrimp & Co Restaurant is a themed restaurant inspired by the famous Forrest Gump movie. It is popular in America and recently made its way to our shores. It specialises in what else but shrimp (?!) and other forms of seafood which makes it a perfect place for seafood lovers.

I particularly liked the deco of the restaurant as it is modelled after various bits of the Forrest Gump movie in a very whimsical manner. There are booth seats downstairs with a very interesting sink (look out for it!) and if the downstairs is full, make your way up some quaint wooden stairs to the upper level which is split into two areas. We sat in Mama’s Living Room, a little area complete with pretty wall paper and pretty pictures on the wall, just like the living room of Mama Gump!

Read about their unique ordering service below.

Each wooden table comes with a bucket filled with sauces, cutlery and a menu in the shape of a Ping Pong paddle…similar to the Ping Pong bat Forrest played against China in! A little box of crackers are also provided as a snack while you wait which I thought was a really nice touch!

Two metal signs with “Run, Forrest, Run” (in blue) and “Stop, Forrest, Stop” (in red) are what you use to get the waiters’ attention. Flip it to red if you need the waiter to stop and to blue if everything is hunky-dory! It sure beats yelling and swinging your hands around to get a waiter’s attention!

We tried the Shrimper’s Heaven which is a Bubba Gump specialty at RM44.90.  Shrimper’s Heaven comes with 4 different types of shrimp prettily served in paper cones – Coconut Shrimp, Chilly Shrimp, Fried Shrimp, Tempura Shrimp and fries complete with 3 different types of sauces for you to dip them in.

How was it?

Well, I personally found the Chilly Shrimp (right) a little hard to get used to. I like my food hot and somehow cold shrimp is just not my thing. I also found it a tad fishy but my family found it okay.

I enjoyed the Fried Shrimp and Tempura Shrimp but found the Coconut Shrimp a little cloying after a while as it was covered with coconut flakes. The shrimp is average sized so don’t expect udang galah!

Ultimately, it is a restaurant for shrimp lovers or if you are a huge Forrest Gump fan. If you are a fan, you would absolutely love the little nuances around the restaurant and their decoration! Prices are a little on the steep side but it is expected from a themed franchise restaurant.
