Sbread, The Gardens Midvalley

I first heard of this interesting place, Sbread, from Babe_KL, which opened in The Gardens Midvalley Lower Ground food area. They market themselves as “Not just any other Toast and Kaya shop” and in these times where toast bread is easily available everywhere, you certainly need a different edge to get yourself noticed. Sbread promises to offer a whole new experience in toast and kaya (coconut jam)! Intrigued, I paid this shop a visit a few weekends ago when I was in The Gardens.
The shop is located towards the back of the food area between The Gardens and Midvalley Megamall LG floors. The whole area has been transformed into a nice hawker centre type place with all kinds of little stalls and shops offering a huge variety of food. Sbread is located right next to Rak Thai and has a pleasing entrance with loafs of unique bread and delicious samples to entice you in.
They are originally from Thailand and market a huge and interesting variety of toast and kaya. Top of their lists is a very interesting charcoal bread which is BLACK! Take a look at this unique bread after the jump!

The bread is made out of bamboo charcoal which is a very popular health product in Japan and Taiwan and is said to have cleansing abilities and improves blood circulation. The colour of the bread does look a little scary but when I tried it, it tasted just like normal bread and didn’t really have much charcoal taste at all! They also stock sesame and white bread which is to be paired with their unique kaya jams.
The other novelty factor Sbread has is their beautifully coloured kaya jams. They have 3 special kayas - Taro (Yam), Vanilla and Pandan.

The Taro kaya is a lovely lilac hue and is filled with little chunks of yam which goes deliciously with the bread. It has a distinctive yam taste which is really yummy if you like yam, like I do! The Vanilla kaya comes in a light brown shade and I found this the mildest tasting out of the three. It had a very slight vanilla fragrance but taste wise, it was just sweet and not as flavourful as the rest. My absolute favourite is their pandan kaya which is available in a warm green. It has a lovely pandan fragrance that is really yummy!
Sbread does a few other types of savoury and sweet toppings such as Special Thai Chilli Paste and Chicken Floss and Butter/Sugar, Milo/Condensed Milk and Special Chocolate which has proven to be very popular with children.
Personally, I found the kaya a little too sweet but it would suit those with a sweet tooth. It was also a bit too runny which makes it a little difficult to eat daintily with the kaya running down the edges of the bread! Their bread is cut thickly which makes it a filling and delicious snack. You’ll be definitely licking your fingers after this!
So, how much for a slice of this experience?
Sbread retails at the following prices:
-
A slice with kaya - RM3.90
-
Peanut butter with toast - RM4.20
-
Loaf of bread - RM9
It also has drinks available in pastel barley or Thai iced tea for you to wash down your bread and kaya with. It is a little on the pricey side but worth a try. They are usually rather generous with samples so do sample to see which kaya flavour is your favourite before you buy!
It is also halal so everyone can enjoy this experience!
