Royal Plaza on Scotts, Singapore

I was recently down in Singapore for the Great Singapore Sale and wow, what a great shopping trip that was! Since our main aim was to shop, we opted to stay on Orchard so we wouldn’t waste too much time travelling and could easily return to dump our shopping bags and catch some rest before going out again. As expected, that period was a super peak period and many hotels on Orchard were fully booked or going at astronomical prices. Luckily we managed to find a room with Royal Plaza on Scotts which was just a short walk away from Tangs on Orchard.

Royal Plaza Hotel is a 5-star hotel located next to DFS Singapore which made it really convenient for us as the Airebus stop is right in front of DFS Singapore. It has a pretty impressive lobby with two curving staircases and a fresco ceiling with pretty paintings.

The whole lobby is filled with the smell from huge scented candles which are scattered all around the place which was quite pleasant to come in to after the heat, hustle and bustle outside.

What struck me most was how handicapped friendly the hotel was. There was a chair lift at the entrance steps for disabled people to go up or down easily and one of the lifts had a disabled friendly button which was lower so those in wheelchairs could access it easily. The lifts had an additional a security feature which required you to swipe your card before you could press your floor. Another plus point was the hotel’s smoke-free policy which goes down really well with me as I really dislike the smell of cigarette smoke.

However, we found the rooms a little small and dark. The room came with a king sized bed, wall plasma TV, wardobe and a desk with a little mini bar. The layout of the furniture made the room feel a little cramped and their lighting wasn’t very strategically placed as they had two spotlights right above the bed which I found quite irritating and harsh if you are trying to watch TV or sleep on the bed. The bathroom was also rather small and only lit by 2 spotlights. Unlike the Hyatt Singapore we stayed in previously, this bathroom didn’t come with any bathtub and only had a shower stall with a rain shower. The rain shower wasn’t as strong as some rain showers are so it wasn’t that enjoyable. Nevertheless, it was still good to come back to after a hard day of shopping!

Our room came with free refills of the mini bar everyday which wasn’t too bad as the mini bar was relatively well-stocked with juices, soft drinks and beer. They also provided us with 2 bottles of mineral water (unfortunately not Evian, unlike the Hyatt! :() everyday. The room also came with free breakfast at their inhouse restaurant, Carousel, which is said to be one of the few halal restaurants available in Singapore so needless to say, it’s rather popular with the Muslims! The breakfast spread was only so-so and not terribly impressive but that’s okay because that only means more space to fill up on Singapore’s yummy food!

At over $200+ a night here, this room doesn’t come cheap but it is definitely convenient if you are taking the Airebus down to Singapore and wish to indulge in a weekend of shopping on the famous Orchard Road.
