Singapore Zoo
I had the opportunity to visit Singapore Zoo the on a trip to Singapore late last year. It has been many years since I’ve been to the Singapore Zoo and I was really thrilled to go as I’ve heard so much about their wonderful exhibits and unique animals such as the polar bears!
The Singapore Zoo is located in Mandai and is a short and pleasant drive in along shady tree lined avenues. It is a zoo modelled after an open concept, no bars zoo where animals are kept in spacious landscaped enclosures, separated from visitors by dry or wet moats which are well concealed from visitors. It offers a real up-close and personal encounter with the animals!
From the entrance of the zoo, you’ll be surprised at how cool and lovely the place is. Everywhere is pleasantly shady with big rain trees and the paths provide an easy walkway, even for the handicapped. I would recommend picking up the day’s schedule from the counter when you arrive and planning your zoo visit so you do not miss the exciting shows and feeding sessions.
It is over a fairly large area so do allocate at least a day to cover everything. Adventurous people can indulge in a breakfast with the orang utans! Sadly though, Ah Meng, the famous orang utan mascot of the zoo has passed away early this year. One of my favourite exhibits was the polar bear exhibit as I was really amazed at how polar bears could live in tropical areas such as ours! They actually provide a little air-conditioned room for them in their enclosure and a thick glass wall in front for visitors to watch their feeding sessions. It was really quite amazing to see how graceful these lumbering bears are in the water!
When the hunger pangs strike, make your way to the many restaurants available around the zoo which range from medium cost to expensive fine dining. For parents with children, fret not as there is a KFC on the grounds complete with a playground to entertain restless children!
Should you get tired walking around, simply hop onto a tram for $5 (adults) and $2.50 (children) and enjoy a pleasant ride around or hop off at the next tram stop. They even have horse carriage rides, elephant rides and pony rides for approximately $8 (adults) and $4 (children)!
And if you’re Malaysian, there’s an added incentive to visit the Zoo till 30 June 2008 because tickets are priced in RM! A normal retail price ticket at $16.50 (adult) and $8.50 (children) are now half-priced at RM16.50 and RM8.50 so you save even more! So do come down to the Singapore Zoo today and have a great day out!

Nice! I’d love to go back there someday, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make the “30 June” promotion deadline…
Hey, I didn’t know about the fare being charged in RM!!! *pouts* Was it just recently?
PE says: Welcome GT!
I think they run this half-price promo (or RM promo) every year around this time of the year which always coincides with the Great Singapore Sale
I believe it ends on 30 June so do look out for this next year!
