J.Co Donuts, The Pavilion
The J. Co Donuts outlet at The Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur, never fails to amuse me. Every weekend, there will always be a long queue snaking their way outside the glass fronted kitchen where workers are hard at work churning out hot and fresh doughnuts to feed the hungry crowd.
Doughnuts are one of the newest food craze to hit our shores and it has certainly garnered a big following, judging by the crowd at J. Co Donut and Big Apple Donut stores! J. Co originates from Indonesia where I have been told, was started by a hairdresser who ventured into doughnuts! The doughnuts come in a myriad of interesting flavours with very interesting names. Choose from the ordinary and humble glazed doughnut to funky ones such as Cheese Me Up and Alcapone! They range from both sweet and savoury to suit every tastebud!
The display of colourful doughnuts are always a delight to observe with their eye-catching icing designs and fillings. Each doughnut is light and cottony soft, especially for Malaysians who have ever only eaten the Dunkin’ Donuts versions which are harder. Each donut is also wonderfully fresh because each doughnut is snapped up so quickly they don’t even have time to go stale! Sweet and soft, the glazed doughnuts are best eaten with a hot cup of coffee which takes away the edge of the sweetness. Even then, I still found it a bit too sweet for me since I don’t eat many sweet things.
Each doughnut retails from RM2 to RM2.30, depending on the variety and like all offers, the more you buy, the cheaper they get. Hence, the orange box has become an increasingly familiar feature in Kuala Lumpur especially at parties and gatherings. Many have likened J. Co to the world famous Krispy Kreme. I guess, for now, this is the closest we can get to Krispy Kreme! Maybe J. Co should take a leaf from Krispy Kreme’s book and start offering each person in the queue a free donut while they queue!
J. Co is located on the Lower Levels of The Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur; past the Food Junction. Look out for the queue, you wouldn’t miss it!
