Killiney Kopitiam - Don’t Go There!

I was feeling hungry this morning and since the usual assortment of Malay stalls in the basement of the mall were closed for renovation, I had no other choice but to walk across to the mall to look for something to eat. I’ve always noticed how packed Killiney Kopitiam is every morning and afternoon and figured that the food must be pretty good for it to be so crowded.
So I took a stroll there and saw that lots of the tables were tucking into an assortment of toasted bread, nasi lemak and some other things in bowls which looked a bit like tong sui. I noticed that they had an assortment of local kuih, sandwiches and baskets of wrapped nasi lemak, mee hoon and mee goreng. I felt like a mee hoon and asked the attendant if there was any egg or sambal inside. He couldn’t understand me at all and I suspect that he couldn’t even speak English! I gave up and took a nasi lemak which my colleague had requested for and my mee hoon. The cashier rang up the bill and guess how much those two little packets came up to?
RM4.20!!!
Which made it RM2.10 per tiny packet! I think the price was RM2 plus RM0.10 tax thrown in which, for my life I cannot understand why, since I’m taking away and not eating in and hence no service required!
My colleague was equally shocked at the prices and the portion and she complained that her nasi lemak wasn’t that great anyway. Another colleague bought their toast bread set once and was charged RM4+ for 2 slices of toast bread with butter and kaya. We’ve both boycotted Killiney now. I guess rental in a mall is high, even for a tiny hole in the wall like the one Killiney occupies but that’s still no excuse to charge cut-throat prices for their food. They’re still hugely popular though so maybe it’s just us who felt ripped-off!
Will you pay RM2.10 for a nasi lemak like that?

Horrors!! I’m glad I’ve never succumbed. No I’d pay 20 sen but not 2.10
PE says: Yeah, disgusting! I hate the feeling of being ripped off!

wow crap! is it still expensive now? i was thinking to hop over to the jaya-one branch to try out with the 30% off coupon…
PE says: I would think that the prices would have only gone up with the recent price increase! But if you have a discount coupon, do give it a try, by all means!
